FAQs

What does it look like to work with van hulzen financial advisors?

Our relationships are built around understanding what matters most to you — your family, your goals, your business, your future, and the legacy you hope to create. We begin by listening. Before discussing investments, we want to understand your values, priorities, concerns, and the moving pieces of your financial life. From there, we help organize and coordinate the areas that impact your financial picture, which may include:

  • Investment management
  • Retirement planning
  • Tax-aware planning
  • Estate and legacy planning coordination
  • Charitable giving strategies
  • Business planning and succession
  • Risk management and insurance review
  • Special needs planning
  • Cash flow and income planning

Many clients think of us as a central point of coordination between their financial lives and the professionals they already trust, including CPAs, attorneys, insurance professionals, and bankers.

Do you work with high-net-worth individuals and families?

Yes. We work with individuals and families who are looking for more than investment management alone. Many of our clients are:

  • Retirees or those nearing retirement
  • Business owners
  • Multi-generational families
  • Professionals and executives
  • Families navigating major life transitions
  • Families caring for loved ones with special needs

Our clients are often seeking a long-term relationship with an advisor who can help simplify financial complexity and coordinate across multiple areas of planning.

Where are client assets held?

Client assets are primarily held with Charles Schwab, one of the largest and most established custodians in the country. Schwab provides the technology, reporting, security, and account infrastructure that help support a streamlined and secure client experience. Using an independent custodian also means clients maintain transparency and direct access to their accounts.

How are you compensated?

Our compensation structure depends on the services being provided. For investment management relationships, fees are generally asset-based and clearly outlined in advance. We believe clients should understand how their advisor is compensated and what services they are receiving in return.

Certain insurance solutions or specialized planning engagements may involve additional compensation structures, which are discussed openly and transparently.

Do you coordinate with CPAs, attorneys, and other professionals?

Yes — and we believe this coordination is one of the most important parts of comprehensive planning. Many financial decisions do not happen in isolation. Tax planning, estate planning, business planning, investment decisions, and insurance strategies often overlap.

When appropriate, we work alongside a client’s CPA, estate attorney, insurance professional, or other trusted advisors to help ensure decisions are aligned and working together toward the same goals.

What makes your firm different from other financial advisors?

Every firm manages money differently. We believe the greater difference often comes from how a firm serves people. At Van Hulzen Financial Advisors, our focus is on long-term relationships, thoughtful planning, and helping clients feel more organized and confident about the future.

Clients often come to us looking for:

  • A more personal relationship
  • Greater coordination between advisors
  • Guidance through life transitions
  • Help simplifying financial complexity
  • A long-term planning partner for their family

Our goal is to provide clarity, continuity, and trusted guidance through every stage of life.

Do you help families build generational wealth?

Yes. Building wealth is only part of the equation. Preserving it, stewarding it wisely, and preparing future generations are equally important.

We help families think through questions such as:

  • How should wealth transfer to future generations?
  • How can family values be passed alongside financial assets?
  • How can heirs be prepared financially?
  • How should trusts, charitable goals, and legacy planning fit together?
  • How can financial decisions support long-term family goals?

These conversations are often deeply personal, and we believe they deserve thoughtful guidance and coordination.

Do you work with business owners?

Yes. Business owners often face unique planning challenges because their personal and business finances are closely connected.

We help business owners think through areas such as:

  • Succession planning
  • Business transition preparation
  • Retirement readiness
  • Tax-aware planning
  • Cash flow and liquidity planning
  • Risk management
  • Personal wealth alignment
  • Coordination with CPAs and attorneys

For many owners, the business represents a significant portion of their net worth. We help clients plan with both the business and the individual or family in mind.

What is holistic financial planning?

Holistic financial planning means looking at the full financial picture rather than focusing on investments alone.

A strong financial plan often involves coordinating:

  • Investments
  • Taxes
  • Estate planning
  • Insurance
  • Retirement income
  • Charitable giving
  • Family goals
  • Business interests
  • Healthcare considerations
  • Legacy planning

Our role is to help clients make decisions with an understanding of how each piece may impact the others.

How often will we meet?

Meeting frequency depends on the complexity of your situation and your preferences. Some clients prefer regularly scheduled review meetings, while others may need additional conversations during periods of transition, such as:

  • Retirement
  • The sale of a business
  • The death of a spouse
  • Inheritance planning
  • Family changes
  • Tax or estate planning updates

We believe communication and accessibility matter, especially during important life moments.

Do I need to have a certain amount of assets to speak with an advisor?

Not necessarily. Some individuals delay reaching out because they believe they need to be at a certain financial stage before working with an advisor. In reality, many important financial decisions happen long before retirement or significant wealth events occur.

If you are looking for guidance, coordination, or a long-term planning relationship, it may make sense to start the conversation earlier than you think.

Do you offer specialized planning for families with special needs?

Yes. Our Special Needs Advisory works with families navigating the unique financial, legal, and long-term planning considerations that often accompany caring for a loved one with special needs.

This may include coordination around:

  • Special needs trusts
  • Government benefit considerations
  • ABLE accounts
  • Long-term care planning
  • Family care coordination
  • Financial funding strategies
  • Multigenerational planning

We believe these families deserve thoughtful guidance from professionals who understand both the financial and human side of planning.

How do I get started?

The best place to start is simply with a conversation.

Whether you are preparing for retirement, navigating a business transition, planning for future generations, caring for a loved one with special needs, or looking for a more coordinated approach to your financial life, we would welcome the opportunity to learn more about your goals and what matters most to you.
