Where have the trust officers gone?

Where have the trust officers gone?

August 25, 2023

Peter, Paul and Mary have a song called, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". Well, where have all the trust and private bank officers gone? It seems to me that these services have systematically disappeared in smaller communities.

When I worked at, what is considered a super-regional bank, there was a private bank and trust department located in our community. A client could walk in the bank and talk directly with a trust advisor. Then those local departments were soon pulled back to a few larger cities. A private banker/officer was still assigned to this community, but it didn't take long until that level of service was reduced as well. Now, most firms have retracted these services to a home office in a large city. And with that the role of local partners, like financial advisors, CPAs and attorneys, shifted to those chosen by the firm or bank.  This has left families, that had long time established relationships with advisors, now dealing with professionals that they do not know.

For nearly 40 years Baird Trust has provided asset management as well as trust administration and estate settlement services to high net-worth and institutional clients. In 2019, when R.W. Baird acquired Hilliard Lyons they also received HIlliard's well-established trust company, now called Baird Trust. With over $20 billion in client assets, Baird Trust is one of the largest state-chartered trust companies.

In addition, Baird Family Wealth was established because there was such a need for the expertise, resources and relationships to help families and business owners plan for the human impact legacy wealth can create. Whether it’s transitioning a family business, setting up and administering a trust or talking through the transfer of wealth to the next generation, Baird Family Wealth has the experience and insight to service the sophisticated needs of legacy wealth.
